Abstract

1410775 Moulding powder FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 22 Sept 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 44045/72 Heading C3B A moulding powder comprises a mixture of particles of: (I) an epoxy group containing acrylic polymer, (II) a cross-linking agent for I, and (III) an inorganic reinforcing filler. The particles of I, II and III have an average particle size of 5-10 Á and > 10% of the particles have a size >25 Á. I may be a copolymer comprising (by wt.) 15-40% glycidyl methacrylate, 0-30% of acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile and the balance methyl methacrylate. II may be a polycarboxylic acid anhydride, a dibasic acid, a dihydric phenol, an aromatic diamine or a blocked polyisocyanate. A preferred III is calcium metasilicate. From 2 to 20% by wt. of I may be replaced by another polyepoxide having m.p. <140‹C. and M.W. 300-4000. A cross-linking catalyst, e.g. a quaternary ammonium salt, a tertiary amine, an amine salt, an imidazole or a metal carboxylate. A fibrous filler, e.g. chopped glass fibres may additionally be present.
