Abstract

1410645 Moulding foamed filters SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 11 Oct 1972 46924/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] A filter press plate is made by heating a mixture of thermoplastic particles and foaming agent in a mould 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, 7 and rotating the mould slowly to produce a plate of foamed plastic. The outer part of the mould space may be filled with finer particles than the central part 9 to produce a plate with an impervious surface. Alternatively a premoulded non-foamed thermoplastic core may be placed in the centre of the mould (Fig. 5, not shown) to reinforce the plate. Steel pipes and glass cloth reinforcement may also be incorporated. Suitable plastics are nylon, polypropylene, polyethylene and P.V.C. Foaming agents and moulding conditions are exemplified. The finished press plate (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) has an individual filtrate outlet (3) and surface grooves. Such plates are used in combination with frames, which may be similarly manufactured.
