Abstract

1410624 Vehicle suspensions L PIETZSCH 10 Nov 1972 [11 Nov 1971 29 Sept 1972] 52095/72 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] An endless track vehicle has a plurality of spring sets each comprising a two springs 123, 124 which are connected to act in series between the vehicle body A and a respective track roller R through a coupler mass 122 upon which a releasable locking device 128 can act to lock one spring 123 in the condition of deflection reached at the instant of locking while leaving the other spring 124 in operation, the locking devices 128 being cyclically operated along the length of the vehicle to reduce pitching movements by control means 129. A gyroscope WK disposed at or near the pitching axis M senses the pitching speed and an acceleration sensor BS is connected to an integrator to determine the linear vertical displacement speed of the body at the axis M. The control means 129 respond to the two outputs separately and in sequence to operate the locking devices 128 to reduce the amplitude of pitching and vertical oscillation. Fig. 4 shows a spring set having two gas springs 210, 211 which communicate with a hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 203, 204 to act in series between body part 201 and track roller R, communication with one spring 210 being through a valve arrangement 216 comprising openable non-return valves which act in opposite directions and are individually controlled. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the valve arrangement is replaced by a lockable floating piston. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the track roller is carried by an arm attached to the centre of a rotatable link the ends of which are connected to pistons acting on a common body of hydraulic fluid communieating with a pair of gas springs. The gyroscope and acceleration sensor may be replaced by a pair of acceleration sensors spaced apart on opposite sides of the pitch axis M.
