Abstract

1410449 Boring earth REED TOOL CO 24 Aug 1973 40217/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] Earth boring apparatus comprises a roller cutter 15 mounted on a shaft 14 carried by a support 13, a seal ring 24 encircling the shaft, and non-metallic resilient means 28 acting between the shaft and a surface 26 of the ring to bias a face 25 of the ring into sealing engagement with a surface 22 of the cutter. The surface 26 is preferably conical, as is complementary surface 23 of the shaft 14. The action of the resilient means causes end 27 of the ring, which is thinner, to expand radially outwardly, so that the ring tends to pivot about edge 29 to form a tight seal. There may be elastomeric material between the surface 22 and the face 25.
