Abstract

1410185 Air heaters; heating modules KOEHRING CO 4 Oct 1972 [12 June 1972] 45763/72 Headings F4K and F4T [Also in Division F1] A heating module for application to a gas flow conduit 10, Fig. 2, particularly an air intake manifold of an I.C. engine, to heat the gas passing therethrough comprises a housing 20 with an inlet having an intercepter 16 to divert a part of the flow in conduit 10 through a flow path in housing 20 from said inlet to a housing outlet which is adapted for direct communi cation with conduit 10 at a point downstream of said inlet, the housing flow path causing gas passing therethrough to swirl about a heat source in the housing 20 in the region of the outlet therefrom, whereby the diverted gas flow is heated in the vicinity of the main flow through conduit. The heat source comprises a flame formed by a burner having a fuel delivery nozzle 44, igniter 104 and a flame retention head 36. The housing 20 has an inlet chamber 26 and an outlet chamber 28 separated by a partition 22 with a through hole 24 providing an acceleration of the diverted gas flow, a minor part of which is diverted through a bore 84 to a compressor, comprising a D.C. motor driving a vaned disc 80, Fig. 3, eccentrically mounted in a chamber 82, delivering compressed gas via a passage 55 to the nozzle 44 for inspiration and atomization of the fuel supplied via a metering device 46. The gas passes from the compressor to passage 55 via a pressure regulator (100), Fig. 4 (not shown), from which gas may be relieved back to conduit 10. The igniter comprises a coil 62, exciter 63, and sparking device 104. When applied to the air intake of an internal combustion engine the module is stated to acid starting thereof and substantially eliminates white or black smoke problems and reduces nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions.
