Abstract

1409471 Wells &c CAMERON IRON WORKS Inc 14 June 1973 [16 June 1972] 28477/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division B3] In a blowout preventer having rams 13A, 13B provided with blades 19A, 19B adapted to shear a drill pipe 15, seals 25A, 26A, 29A on the ram 13A and seals 25B, 26B, 29B on the ram 13B engage the body 11 of the preventer, and a seal 42 extends across one ram to engage the other ram when the rams are closed. The seal 42 is carried by the blade 19B but may be carried by the blade 19A or both blades may carry seals 42. Seals 37A, 37B each extend between ablade and a ram. The side seals 25A, 26A, 25B, 26B are of deformable material with rigid inserts which prevent extrusion of the material. Pins depending from the seals 29A, 29B engage grooves in pins on the side seals to lock the side seals in position, and the blades may be bolted to, or integral with, the rams. The rams are shown in Fig. 2 in their closed position, spaces being left to avoid crashing the sheared ends of the pipe. The rams may be inclined to the pipe, and the co-acting surfaces of the blades may be curved.
