Abstract

140,939. Batch, E. G. June 5, 1919. Road-vehicle signals; mechanical telegraphs; transparency and stencil luminous signals.-A signalling-device shown for use on motor-vehicles, but applicable also to aircraft, ships, &c. comprises a square or pulygonal casing 37 with windows in each side, arranged so as to be free from obstructions and visible on all sides. Warnings or indications of intended changes of course, &c. are optically projected on to the windows by means of an endless band or web 41 similar in form to a length of kinematograph film, arranged in conjunction with a central source of illumination 39 and a number of optical projecting systems 40. The endless band carries a number of similarly-arranged sets of notices corresponding to the number of windows in the casing, so that the same notice is simultaneously displayed at each window. The band 41 runs on sprocketwheels 42, one of these being geared by pinions 42' to a central shaft 43 connected by bevel-gearing and shafting 50, 48, 46 to the rotatable pillar 20 of an operating or control gear, shown separately in Figs. 6 and 8. The control device is situated in convenient proximity to the ordinary steering-pillar 13, the shaft 20 being mounted in a tubular support 17 secured to the pillar 13 by a clamp 18. To the support 17 is secured a bracket 16 carrying an arc-shaped indicating-plate 15 provided with a series of notices or warnings 15<1>. An operating-handle 21, transversely pivoted at 22 to the shaft 20, is moved into position over the selected warning, thereby transmitting movement to the endless band 41, a spring 26 pressing the handle down so that a tooth thereon engages one of the notches 24<1> on the flange 24 of the indicator plate 15. As the handle is pressed down, a second projection thereon, in the form of a lug 31, comes into contact with a concentric spring-mounted plate 29, thereby establishing an electric connexion serving to light the lamp 39 and at the same time to give an audible alarm by ringing a bell 36 arranged under the casing 37. The bell may be rung independently in any position of the handle 21, by means of a press-button 27 in the knob 23 serving to establish contact with an insulated extension 28' on the handle, such extension being always in spring contact with a strip 28 on the edge of the plate 15. When the handle 21 is lifted or rests on the flange 24, the lamp 39 is extinguished. Further raising of the handle 21, preliminary to issuing a fresh warning, establishes contact between an extension 21@ thereof and an arc-shaped contact plate 32 on the opposite side of the pillar 17, thereby causing a lamp 33 to illuminate the indicator plate 15. This lamp is extinguished when the handle 21 engages a notch 24<1> on completion of the movement. The casing 37 may contain a second compartment divided from the first by a partition 53 and containing a lamp 54 serving to illuminate windows 52 in each side upon which the driver's license number is displayed. A plan of the electrical connexions is shown in Fig. 9.
