1409268 Mineral-mining machines DRESSER EUROPE SA 18 Oct 1973 [25 July 1972] 34794/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] Located adjacent to a rotary cutter of a material-cutting machine to maintain cut material, e.g. mined mineral, in close contact with the cutter over a part of the periphery thereof is an arcuate cowl, which is displaceable from one position to another about the cutter when clutch means provided between the cow] and the cutter is actuated to utilise part of the power being transmitted to the cutter. One part of the clutch means can be mounted either on the cutter drive shaft or on the cutter to rotate therewith. The clutch means may comprise an annular pressure chamber 5, Which is secured to encircles a driven shaft 3 on which the cutter is co-axially mounted, arcuate drive members 6 and pressure means 10 within the chamber for urging the drive members 6 radially outwards of the chamber into contact with an arcuate part of the cowl. The drive members 6 and/or the cowl part are provided with one or more friction linings. The chamber can be of U-shaped cross section with the mouth of the chamber closed by a split ring 9, the drive members 6 can then be portions of the ring 9 and the pressure means 10 may be an annular tube housed within the chamber. The clutch means when mounted on the cutter may also comprise a series of radially or axially-acting piston cylinder devices with the pistons thereof cooperating directly with a part of the cowl, the pistons or the cowl part being provided with one or more friction linings. The clutch means may also be such as to ensure of frictional engagement between the cowl and the cutter when the cowl is moved axially of the cutter by appropriate means.
