Abstract

1409161 Metallurgical converters PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP 11 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27686/73 Heading F4B In the conversion of a converter 10 from the top blown to the bottom blown type said converter incorporating a trunnion ring 20 and trunnion pins 28, 29, boring machinery 70 (80, Fig. 2) is positioned in cavities such as 33, 71, 74 and 75 for drilling axial and radial bores in the trunnion pins 28, 29 said bores being connected to multiway tuyeres 48 in the refractory bottom 46 or to similar tuyeres (178, Fig. 10), in the side walls. As shown, Fig. 7, with the drive side trunnion 28 and its associated support and cooling block 26, the axial bore 90 receives concentric stainless steel tubes 94, 95 engaging an adapter 91, similar tubes 105, 96 and 112 in radial bores carrying incoming cooling water, outgoing cooling water and hydrocarbon gas respectively. The idler side trunnion 29 and its associated block 27 are treated similarly to supply an oxidising gas and a stream of oxygen carrying solids, e.g. lime. The fluid pipes extend to rotary joints (118, Fig. 6 and 142, Fig. 8), which are supplied with the appropriate fluids. In forming the converter bottom a portion of the shell is cut away and replaced by an annular plate 60 with inner reinforcing ring 63, a bottom plate 52 formed with holes for the passage of tuyeres 48 and a easing 58 secured to the plate 60 by clamps 69. Refractory lining 46 is disposed round the tuyeres. Each tuyere 48 comprises concentric tubes 49 and 50, the latter supplying oxygen and fluxing materials from pipe 56 and the space between the two supplying a hydrocarbon gas, e.g. propane from pipe 54. Cracking of the propane in the tuyeres absorbs heat effectively cooling said tuyeres.
