Abstract

1408819 Polymerizing dienes SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 29 Oct 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 50265/73 Heading C3P Butadiene is polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of emulsifier, dispersing agent, initiator and chain transfer agent wherein (a) in a first stage polymerization is carried out in a phase separate from polymer being formed, (b) in an intermediate stage, monomer is added incrementally in amounts such that immediately after each addition the conversion is at least 45% and (c) in a final stage the reaction is completed. The products are low viscosity, gelfree latices having solids contents above 40% and a number average particle size of at least 1800 A. They are suitable for producing ABS graft polymers.
