Abstract
1408705 Seismic energy generators TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 15 June 1973 28498/73 Heading H4D A seismic energy generator of the compressed gas gun type for use underwater is constructed so as substantially to eliminate secondary bubble-oscillation energy and comprises a piston which uncovers a discharge part to release gas abruptly from a cylindrical chamber, the ratio of the port's cross-sectional dimensions in the circumferential and axial directions of the chamber, respectively, being at least three to one. In the embodiment shown, with the gun in its charged state, a compressed air charge is retained in chamber 11 by a piston valve 57 which is held against a sprung valve seat 35 by a pressure differential acting on its upper and lower faces. The pressure on the upper face of piston 57 is maintained in an auxiliary chamber 67 by an auxiliary piston valve 72, itself held in the closed position by a differential pressure. To fire the gun, a solenoid valve 88 is actuated to reduce the pressure above piston 72 which then moves up to exhaust gas from chamber 67 into exhaust chambers 74 (and thence via check valves 126 into the water). Piston 57 then moves up to release the main air charge from chamber 11 via radially-directed ports 61 into the water to generate the seismic pulse. The ports have a cross-section as specified above: this, together with the fact that the sprung valve seat 35 enables an abrupt opening of ports 61, gives the desired bubble characteristic.
