Abstract

1408606 Incinerators JOSEF MARTIN FEUERUNGSBAU GmbH 6 Oct 1972 [9 Oct 1971] 46094/72 Heading F4B In a process and apparatus for the simultaneous combustion of refuse and sewage, the refuse is fed to furnace 1, and the sewage sludge is fed through pipe 8 to an evaporator 7 where part of the water content of the sludge is removed. The evaporator 7 is heated to a temperature of 40-60‹ C. by steam from a boiler 5 heated by the combustion of the refuse. A reduced pressure is produced in the evaporator 7 by a venturi 12 which draws off the vapour and mixes it with the steam in line 6. The vapour and steam condense in heat exchanger 13 and are drawn off at 14. The concentrated sewage sludge is fed by a pump 9 into the furnace 1 to be burnt with the refuse on a grate 3. In a modification the sewage is concentrated in a centrifuge and only the liquid part passes to the evaporator. The concentrated sludge passes direct to the furnace. The thickened sludge leaving the evaporator may also be passed back to the centrifuge. Alternatively the sewage may be thickened in two stages, an evaporator 7 as in the form of Fig. 1 and a further evaporator in which the sludge is dried in a thin film on steam-heated surfaces. The dried sludge is scraped off and passed to the furnace. Both evaporators are connected to venturi jets to produce a low temperature. The second evaporator may have a separate steam supply from boiler 5 and the vapour produced may be added to the steam entering the heat-exchanger 13. The condensate from the heat exchanger is drawn off and any remaining vapour passed to the furnace over line 10. The dried sludge is fed to the furnace with the refuse. In the form of Fig. 5 the sewage is introduced at 8 first with a preheater 37 fed with steam at 38, it then passes over line 17 to evaporator 7 having a steam coil 13 and a vent 11 connected to the venturi 12. The vapour drawn off from the second evaporator 20 may be blown into the furnace.
