Abstract

1407734 Wells &c GRAY TOOL CO 28 March 1973 [10 May 1972] 14915/73 Heading E1F A control line for the transmission of hydraulic fluid to a down-hole safety valve 12 for the operation thereof, includes a substantially annular passageway 74 between inner and outer tubing strings 22 and 34, respectively. The strings include a pair of interengaging shoulders 36, 38 by means of which the outer string is supported by the inner string, and notches 92 formed in one or both of these shoulders constitute part of the passageway. A hanger 14 has a throughbore 15 which receives the top ends of the strings 22, 34 and seals the top end of the passageway 74, and the hanger is further provided with a conduit 86 which communicates the passageway 74 with a threaded hydraulic-fluid inlet 90. The annular passageway terminates in the proximity of the valve 12 and the control line continues to the valve in the form of a relatively short external pipe 60. Adjacent lengths of inner tubing are joined by means of pairs of joint members 20, 40 having abutting frusto-conical surfaces 32, 50, and the outer lengths of tubing are joined by internallythreaded collars 52 which when tightened prestress the members 20, 40 to seal their abutting surfaces.
