Abstract

1407695 Fibrous TiCl 3 SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 22 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 13922/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Fibrous titanium trichloride is obtained by reducing titanium tetrachloride slowly with an organometallic compound, e.g. diethyl aluminium chloride, for 4 to 8 hours at - 20‹ to - 30‹ C. The presence of a hydrocarbon medium and stirring the mixture are preferred features. The product slurry may be heated, e.g. at 160‹ C. with stirring, prior to recovery of the elongated fibrous particles of TiCl 3 . The fibrous TiCl 3 may be used as a Ziegler catalyst component in the production of fibrous polymers (see Division C3).
