Abstract
1,179,099. Polymerizing aralkyl halides. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 11 Sept., 1967, No. 41465/67. Heading C3R. Polymers are obtained by polymerizing aralkyl halides of formula where R1, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals and X is a halogen atom, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Group I to III organometal compound and a metal halide of a transition metal of Group IV A , to VI A or Group VIII, the molar ratio of the organometal compound to transition metal halide not exceeding 1. In examples, benzyl chloride, 2-methyl-5-isopropyl benzyl bromide, 2-ethyl-5-pentyl benzyl iodide and 2-cyclohexyl benzyl chloride are polymerized using as catalysts vanadium tetrachloride with triethylaluminium, vanadium trichloride with diethylaluminium chloride, titanium tetrachloride with tri-isopropyl aluminium, titanium trichloride with ethylaluminium dichloride, titanium tribromide with tri-isobutylaluminium and vanadium trichloride with triethylaluminium, the reactions taking place with cooling in n-heptane, methylene dichloride, iso-octane and cyclohexane. Other materials which may be used are mentioned.
