Abstract

1407441 Chucks JOHN M PERKINS & SMITH Ltd 24 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 44844/72 Heading B3B A chuck for gripping a tool having a square shank portion and a cylindrical shank portion comprises a first body portion 2 having a plurality of slots; a plurality of jaws 8 each received in a respective slot and movable radially to grip the said square shank portion; a plurality of actuating members, e.g. wedges 14, also movable in said slots so that co-operating inclined faces of the wedges 14 and jaws 8 produced radial movement of the jaws from axial movement of the wedges; and a second body portion 18 axially movable on the first body portion 2 to cause said axial movement of the wedges. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a second set of jaws, e.g. balls, are provided to grip the cylindrical portion of the shank, both sets of jaws being actuated simultaneously by the said second body portion. The second body portion 18 is screw threadably engageable with the first body portion 2 to actuate through a thrust ring 16, the wedges 14 to move the jaws 8 radially inwardly. The angle of the wedges enable the jaws 8 to be selflocking in conjunction with the inside of the second body portion 18, even when the top is only loosely held. The said second set of jaws are provided by three balls in a cage and are actuated by a frusto-conical portion of the second body portion. The balls also act through the thrust ring 16 to actuate the jaws 8. The shank of the top may have a groove engaged by the balls to prevent the tap being pulled out from the chuck.
