Abstract
1407378 Boring earth &c REED TOOL CO 4 June 1973 26559/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] The lubricating system of a roller-cutter drill bit has a normally-closed port 56, Fig 2, which is capable of opening to allow the passage of lubricating or drilling fluid to equalise excessive differential pressures between the system and exterior. The port 56 is formed in a resilient diaphragm 44, preferably by means of a needle and inserts 42 and 46 have concave faces 50, 52 which govern the degree of flexiblity of the diaphragm and therefore the differential pressure necessary to open the port. In an alternative embodiment, Fig 3, the port 62 is formed in the diaphragm pressure compensator 60 of the lubricating system. Plates having flowrestricting orifices (86, 90), Fig 6 (not shown), may be provided to prevent excessive flow rates through the port and therefore tearing of the diaphragm.
