Abstract

1407371 Grinding tyres GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 22 May 1973 [27 June 1972] 24256/73 Heading B3D [Also in Division B7] A method of correcting irregularities in action of a tyre T comprises concurrently during continuous rotation of the tyre about its axis of revolution measuring variations in force exterted radially by the tyre between means 5 rotatably mounting the tyre and means 10 urged against the outer circumference of the tyre, removing material from at least one of two lateral margins 42, 44 of the tyre in amount and angular location such as to reduce said force variations, measuring variations in radius of said circumference, and removing material from said circumference between said margins in amount and angular location to reduce such radius variations. The tyre is mounted on a rotatable chuck, inflated and rotated in the direction of arrow 54 at a predetermined speed about a fixed axis 5. A load roll 10 bears on the tyre and variations in force exerted by the tyre between the axis 5 and roll 10 are detected by a transducer 20 having circuitry 30 for moving grinding wheels 40 into engagement with the lateral margins 42, 44 of the wheel and remove material therefrom at angular positions where the transducer has detected loads above a predertermined amount. At the same time, a grinding wheel 50 is advanced towards the tyre until a sensor 61 contacts an intermediate region of the tyre to sense variations in the radius, signals from the sensor being fed to a control circuit 70 which operates an infeed drive 75 to advance the grinding wheel in increments of, say, 0À002 inch and remove material from the intermediate region at the high spots until oscillations of the sensor 61 are reduced to a predetermined amount.
