1407262 Vehicle transporting trailer JOHN RATCLIFF (TAIL LIFTS) Ltd 11 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29294/72 Heading B7B A vehicle transporting trailer has a boom 19 the forward end of which is pivotally connected to a mounting 11 so that the free end of the boom, having supports 30, 31 for the forward wheels of the vehicle to be towed (not shown), may be moved between a loading position with the supports resting on the ground, a transporting position raised a short distance above the ground, and a stowed position where the beam extends vertically upwards. As shown in Fig. 2, the boom 19 comprises a beam 23, which is slidable with respect to parallel beams 20, may be locked in a required longitudinal position by inserting a locking member 25 through registering holes in the beams. The beam 23 carries a plate 26 to which is pivoted a support cradle 27 carrying the wheel supports 30, 31 which may pivot about transverse axes by means of shafts 32 and sockets 33. The beams 20 of the boom are pivotally attached to the mounting 11 via brackets 16, 18 and a pivot pin 17. The boom 19 is arranged to be swung upwardly by extension of an hydraulic ram 34. For retaining the boom in the towing position, i.e. as shown in Fig. 1, a lever 41, Fig. 3, mounted in each arm 20, engages a shoulder 38 of an abutment plate 37 fixed to mounting 11. The lever 41 is retracted into beam 20 against a spring bias by movement to the right, as seen in Fig. 3, of a wedge member 43 actuated by a knob 46, to permit the boom to swing downwardly on to the ground or to be swung upwardly and lever 41 actuated to engage a shoulder 39 on plate 37 to retain the boom in the upright stowed position. The knob 46 is arranged to actuate the levers in both beams 20 and there may be provision for facilitating equal movement of the levers 41.
