Abstract

A semi-trailer comprises a longtudinal platform 11, ground engaging wheels 12 at the rearward end of the platform 11 and box frame 14 at the forward end of the platform 11, which box frame carries a pick-up plate 15 and a king-pin 16 and is engageable in use with the fifth wheel of a towing tractor, the box frame 14 being slidable on the platform 11 and being connected to an operating linkage 23, 21 for lowerable supporting legs 17 near the forward end of the platform 11 such that movement of the box frame 14 in respective directions relative to the platform 11 causes respective lowering or raising of the supporting legs 17 via the operating linkage 23, 21. As shown, the supporting legs 17 are pivotally secured to the platform 11 and the pivoting axis of the respective supporting legs 17 extends generally horizontally and transversely to the lengthwise direction of the platform 11. In use, movement of the box frame 14 away from the groundengaging wheels 12 causes the legs 17 to pivot forwardly and downwardly into their lowered positions. The semi-trailer further comprises manually operable locking means, e.g. a locking pin, for locking the supporting legs 17 in their raised and/or lowered position and the locking means may act, in use, on the box frame 14 to lock the latter in its rearmost and forward positions corresponding respectively to the raised and lowered positions of the supporting legs 17.
