Abstract
1407176 Pretreatment of gasifier feed AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 11 Oct 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 47604/73 Heading C5E A method of feeding carbonaceous particles to a gasifier operating at elevated temperature and pressure includes the steps of providing a slurry of solid carbonaceous particles in water, introducing the slurry into a drying chamber maintained substantially at or above the operating pressure of the gasifier wherein it is mixed with hot gaseous effluent from the gasifier so that the carbonaceous particles without substantial reaction are dried and entrained in the gaseous effluent, substantially immediately separating the dried carbonaceous particles from the gaseous effluent, and introducing the separated carbonaceous particles into the gasifier. The slurry may be preheated, e.g. by heat exchange with steam, hot condensate, or hot gas from the gasifier or independent gas heater, prior to entering the drying chamber. Water used to form the slurry may be fresh water, condensed steam from the gasifier process or boiler feed water. Steam may be added to control the humidity of the gaseous effluent used to dry the slurry. At least one holding tank may be used to provide a reservoir of slurry to be introduced into the drying chamber. A feed stream of the slurry may be provided and the pressure of the feed stream may be raised to above the operating pressure of the gasifier before introduction into the drying chamber. The feed stream of slurry may contain at least 40% by wt. solid carbonaceous material in the form of coal, coke, char, or mixtures thereof in water prepared in a mixing tank or a slurry in water prepared by wet grinding. The gas consisting essentially of water vapour, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, separated from the solid carbonaceous material may be subsequently subjected to a shift step wherein carbon dioxide and hydrogen are produced. The separated carbonaceous particles may be introduced into the gasifier by entrainment in a stream of reactant being fed to the gasifier.
