1406954 Electrolytic cell cover SOLVAY & CIE SA 18 Sept 1973 [10 Oct 1972] 43713/73 Heading C7B A cover 1 in an electrolytic cell comprises an upper part 3 and a lower part 2 assembled separably in a leak-proof manner such that part 2 may lift momentarily under the action of a predetermined excess internal gas pressure. Part 2 is above the working electrolyte level and may be of electrolyte-resistant concrete held in place by its own weight or of a synthetic plastic such as polyester held in place by springs mounted on rods which guide the lifting movement. Brine electrolysis in a diaphragm cell is specified, the cover providing protection against explosive recombination of H 2 and Cl 2 .
