Abstract

1406720 Gain control arrangement SPERRY RAND CORP 29 Sept 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 45025/72 Heading H4R In a data transmission system for either analogue or mutli-level digital transmission the incoming data from store 26, Fig. 2, is fed through a device 30 which provides a power function of the input signal, e.g. #<SP>x</SP> where # is a constant and x the input signal, for transmission. At the receiver, Fig. 3, the received signals are fed through a device 43 providing a logarithmic function, which restores the data to its original form and reduces any multiplicative distortion provided by the transmission system to additive distortion, having a smaller effect. Preferably the signals, before conversion to power functions, are added in modulo fashion in accumulator 29, and at the receiver differences are taken between successive signals in subtractor 47, also in modulo fashion, so that slowly varying multiplicative distortion, e.g. gain changes, have little or no effect on the output accuracy. An alternative arrangement, Fig. 9 (not shown), converts the input signals to power functions (in 126) and multiplies successive signal sample functions together (at 127) and/or at the receiver Fig. 11 (not shown) the input signals have the ratios between successive samples taken (at 151) before determining the log of the ratios (at 156). The arrangement is a mathematical equivalent of the first system with the order of the components reversed.
