Abstract

1406707 Identifying aircraft BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 1 Oct 1973 [3 July 1972] 31122/72 Heading H4D To provide in a system carrying aircraft 8 a plan view of a second aircraft 2, heading towards the first aircraft, the second aircraft is irradiated by a very short laser pulse, whereby reflections thereof start from the nose and finish from the tail. The reflections are received and focused by a lens 20, Fig. 2, on to the target of a streak camera 12 wherein the electron bundle from the target produced by the received reflection is scanned from the top to the bottom of a fluorescent display screen 24 at a speed corresponding to the speed of light, whereby the reflections from the nose appear at the top of the screen and those from the tail appear at the bottom of the screen, the overall result being a plan view 30 of the aircraft 2. An image intensifier 28 views the screen 24 via a light fibre bundle 26. Ground radar initially acquires the second aircraft and transmits its co-ordinates to the system carrying aircraft, radar on board said system aircraft keeping the laser pulse transmitter directed on the second aircraft 2. Plan views of ships or vehicles may be similarly produced, with a view limiting mask 34 in front of the target allowing the display of a selected horizontal section only.
