Abstract

1406266 Stress limiting devices DIEBOLD Inc 13 Nov 1972 52366/72 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A spring unit for connecting a lifting cable to the vacuum head of a pallet loader (Fig. 1, not shown) to absorb shocks comprises a base plate 14 for connection to the vacuum head 8, a mounting member 21 adjustably connected to the base plate 14, rubber shear springs 25 connecting the mounting member 21 with an abutment member 29 for a spring 34, the spring 34 biasing the member 29 out of direct loadtransmitting engagement with a plate 35, and the plate 35 having an adjustable connection with the cable 9. When the vacuum head is at rest, the spring unit takes up the Fig. 2 position with the plate 35 biased away from the member 29. At the start of a lifting operation the cable 9 moves upwards carrying the plate 35 which compresses the spring 34 and engages the lower end of a member 30 rigid with the member 29. Further raising of the cable 9 (Fig. 7) therefore lifts the member 29 and the lifting force is transmitted in shear through the rubber springs 25 to the mounting member 21 and thence via tie rods 16 to the vacuum head 8. Should the rubber springs 25 fail, the mounting member 21 and the member 29 are prevented from separating completely by washers 24 on the tie rods 16.
