Abstract
1406177 Rending textile materials flame retardant HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 22 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 13905/73 Heading DIP A composition for rendering textile materials flame-retardant comprises (a) a N-hydroxymethyl compound containing the group I at least one free valency of which is attached to a phosphorus-containing organic group, and (b) tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride. The preferred N-hydroxymethyl compounds are II The mole ratio of the N-hydroxymethyl compound to the tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride may be from 1:1 to 1:0.05, preferably 1:0.2 to 1:0.1. The materials treated may be in fibre or fabric form and may comprise cellulosic cotton, wool and blends of cotton and polyester. The composition may be applied by thermal induced pad curing e.g. as an aqueous solution to leave from 5 to 50%, preferably from 10 to 30% by weight of the composition on the textile. In examples, fabrics of cotton wool or cotton/polyethylene terephthalate are treated with aqueous compositions comprising II or III and tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride, a methylolated melamine and optionally aqueous 40% formalin solution, and a zinc nitrate hexahydrate catalyst, dried and cured to give a flame retardant and wash-resistant finish.
