1405950 Forming non-woven fabrics MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Nov 1972 51894/72 Heading D1R A non-woven fabric of randomly orientated continuous filaments is made by melt-spinning a polyolefin containing 0.01 to 5%, by weight of one or more compounds of formula: where S is sulphur, P is phosphorous, Y<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>2</SP> and Y<SP>3</SP> are each oxygen or sulphur, n is 0 or 1 and either R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are each an alkyl group of at least 6 carbon atoms or one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen and the remainder are alkyl groups of at least 6 carbon atoms, drawing the filaments thus obtained by jetting air against the filaments and collecting them upon a travelling conveyor. The polyolefin may be high density polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, polybutene-1 and poly-4-methylpentene-1. Preferably R', R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> are alkyl groups with 8 to 20 carbon atoms. When the mixture of polyolefin and phosphorous compound is heated to 200- 350‹C for 4-15 minutes, preferably in the melt spinner some chain degradation occurs particularily to the longer chains thus producing a narrower molecular weight distribution. The tensile strength of the filaments is increased and breakage during drawing is reduced. The extruded mixture may contain 0.2% of 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol or 0.1% of tetrakis (3, 5-di tert. butyl-4-hydroxy-α, #-dihydrocinnamateoxymethyl) methane.
