Abstract

1405878 Chromizing ferrous substrates ALBRIGHT AND WILSON Ltd 12 July 1972 [20 July 1971] 33890/71 Heading C7F A ferrous substrate is chromized using a chromium source, a metal halide and a metal oxide e.g. an iron oxide, the chromium source being adherent to or incorporated in a flexible non- metallic sheet, e.g. asbestos paper or plastics, and the whole being heated to 450 to 750‹ C for at least 4 hours, and then to at least 800‹ C. The halide may be ferrous or ferric, manganous or aluminium chloride, fluoride or bromide or an alkali metal fluoride, chloride, bromide or iodide. The oxide may be a powder, which may be mixed with the chromium source, or it may be present as a coating formed on the substrate, e.g. by heating in air. The halide may be present in a second flexible sheet.
