Abstract

1405786 Block copolymer adhesive composition SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 20 Sept 1972 [22 Sept 1971] 43570/72 Heading C3P An adhesive composition comprises (a) 100 parts of a block copolymer having at least two polymer blocks A and at least one polymer block B, each A block being a non-elastomeric polymer of a mono-alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon having a molecular weight of 2000 to 125,000 and having not more than 25% of the original aromatic double bonds hydrogenated, and B is an elastomeric block of a conjugated diene polymer of molecular weight from 10,000 to 250,000 and having at least 75% of the aliphatic double bonds hydrogenated or a polymer derived from alpha mono-olefin(s); (b) 25 to 300 parts of a tackifying resin which is compatible with the B block, and incompatible with the A blocks; (c) 10 to 200 parts of an aromatic resin having a softening point above 100‹ C. and which is compatible with the A blocks, and (d) 0 to 200 parts of an extending oil which is compatible with the B block. Pressuresensitive, contact and hot-melt adhesives may be prepared, the latter including a wax, e.g. a paraffin wax/microcrystalline wax mixture. Specific components include (a) styrene-b- (hydrogenated) butadiene or isoprene-b-styrene and alphamethylstyrene-b- (hydrogenated) butadiene or isoprene-b-alphamethylstyrene, (b) pentadiene-1,3 and 2-methyl-2-butene copolymer, polyhydric esters of rosin or hydrogenated rosin, alpha- and beta-pinene resins, olefinic resins and synthetic polyterpenes, (c) coumarone - indene resins, vinyl toluene - alphamethylstyrene copolymers, alphamethylstyrene homopolymers, polyindenes and polystyrenes, and (d) petroleum oils, oligomeric polypropylenes or hydrogenated polybutadiene, and vegetable and animal oils.
