Abstract

1405628 Photographic processes ENERGY CONVERSION DEVICES Inc 19 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 31506/72 Heading G2C [Also in Division C2] A process for producing negative images comprises imagewise exposing a material containing a layer including a compound in which at least one element E selected from the elements having an atomic number above 20 and of groups IB, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IVA, IVB, VA, VB, VIA, VIB (except Po), VIIA and VIII of the periodic table to form a latent image and developing the latent image (normally by heating) to produce an image consisting of the element E. Alternatively, positive images are produced by either (i) adding a stabilizer to the material which stabilizes on imagewise exposure and/or development reacts with the compound so element E is not produced and then applying heat to produce element E in the unexposed areas (presumably by decomposing the compound) or (ii) adding a trap-former to the material which trapformer on imagewise exposure prevents latent image formation and then developing to produce element E in the unexposed areas. Positive or negative images of element E may be produced by adding a negative or positive working photo-resist to the material, imagewise exposing and developing to produce a negative or positive resist and then reducing the compound to element E in the resist. Electrostatographic negative images may be produced if an electrically conductive support is used and the image of element E produced by the first method above is electrically conductive and is in an insulating binder, by heating further to remove the binder in the exposed, conductive areas, electrostatically charging so that the unexposed areas retain the charge, toner developing and transferring the toner to a receptor sheet. As particularly described, a Te compound of Formula X admixed with acetophenone (to make it sufficiently sensitive) and cyanoethylated starch as binder is imagewise exposed to a flash-gun and developed by heating to form a negative image of Te. Alternatively, the compound of Formula X may be replaced by one in which the acetophenone groups are replaced by acetone or 1, 4-diacetophenone groups, and acetone and 1, 4 diacetophenone respectively are used as sensitizers or wherein Te is replaced by Se as the central atom.
