Abstract

1405506 Mould linings TIDO CHEMISCH-TECHNISCHE PRODUKTE GmbH 1 Dec 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 55678/72 Heading D2B [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A lining comprising 60-90% by weight of aluminium waste metal, 1-19% by weight fibrous filler, 1-10% 'by weight of a plastics binding agent, 0.01-1% by weight of an anionic and/or non-ionic wetting agent is produced by adding the aluminium waste metal in finely divided form to an aqueous preparation of the fibrous filler and wetting agent, adding the binding agent, placing the pasty material so obtained onto a porous support and applying suction or pressure until a lining having sufficient green strength to be handled is formed. Up to 22.5% by weight of an additional constituent selected from exothermic substances mineral fillers and mixtures thereof may also be added. Aluminium waste metal is defined as the solidified scum and smelting material obtained during the electrolytic manufacture or remelting of aluminium or aluminium alloys. The linings are preferably used for lining ingot mould hoods, mould attachments, visers and gates. The fibrous filler is preferably inorganic such as asbestos, e.g. amosite, glass fibres or mineral wool. The lining may also contain organic fibrous materials such as sawdust, rice straw or other cellulosic fibres, and plastics fibres. The binding agent is preferably an aminoplast or a phenoplast. In the specific Examples the wetting agent is a mixture of alkylbenzene sulphonate and an ethoxylated fatty acid condensate. The mineral filler may be clay, sand, dolomite, kieselguhr, expanded clay, expanded corundum, vermiculite, perlite or light fire clay. The exothermic substance may be powdered aluminium, iron oxide and/or pyrolusite, and optionally cryolite.
