Abstract

140,511. Williams, E. C. Dec. 18, 1918. Drawing.-In drawing tubes, the mandrel, which may rotate, is cooled by fluid, which may also cool the inside of the tube. To allow the mandrel to rotate, the inlet O and outlet P are arranged in non-rotating rings N<1>, N<2> clamped by bolts N<6> on either side of a ring N<5> adapted to rotate with the mandrel, the joint between the rings being kept tight by packing N<4>. The ring N<5> has openings O<1> communicating with annular channels in which are arranged one or more screw caps S having openings t. The mandrel has hellow plugs u, u<1> which make a tight connexion with the caps S and ring N<5> by means of packing W, and which connect respectively with the bore of the mandrel and of the tube i, which is supported by distance-pieces; or the tube may fill the bore, except for longitudinal grooves on its surface; or two tubes, for flow and return, may be used. If the outlet P is closed, a spring valve d allows the fluid to pass into the tube being made. The spring h<1> is adjusted by rotating the valve body d which screws into the nut f, which is adapted to move axially but not rotate in the cavity g.
