.rinpnnaton tiled. May 2li,
To ait whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM II. Cnn'rrN, a citizen of the United States ot America, and residing at Brooklyn, invthelcounty. of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valvcaot whichthe following is a s citil cation, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine. y i
This invention relates to valves, particularly to steam valves, which require packing to prevent leakage, andthe object thereof is to provide self-contained means in such a valve which permit the substitution of packing without shutting oi the steam; a further object is to provide such non-leaking means at a plurality of pointsr whereby the stoppage is correspondingly 'multipliedg and a still further object is to provide Such means which are simple in construction and use,
which do not require any-'radical change in y the valve construction, and whichv are very inexpensive. y n v My invention is fully described in the following s ecification, 'of which the accomr panying rawing formsa part, said drawing being a central vertical section Ataken In the said drawingl have shown the cas' ing a of aLvalve rovided with the usual inlet port a2 adapted tor connection with the steam:
system, andan outlet port a3 adapted to be connected with -a'radiator or the like by means of a connection at* andcoupling a5, and said casing being also provided with a l removable top b having a screw-thread b2 stem c provided with the usual therein and having Valso a removable cap 3 -within which the usual packing bt is placed,
all of said parts being of the usual or any desired construction.
Rotatablymounted 4in the'to yb is a valve handle c2 and screw-thread c3 in engagement with the` tl'ireadb2 whereby' the stem is raised or low ered and said stem carries, in the form shown, a disk-valve' of* seated at c5 to close the Ainlet port a2, these parts being also of the usual or any desired form. It will be ob-` served that the upper part `of the stern is of considerably less diameter than that portion bearing the screwthread,forrning a shoulderr therebetween, and this shoulder, v.as shownat i I give an inclined, tapered, or similar form and adapted' to closely engage the similarly formed top d2 of the screwthreaded reess of Specineation of lietters Patent. Patented ll/Iar, lid, 1911.,
1910.. Serial N0. 568,225.
the top b, in order to prevent any passage of Steam or other similar iiuid therebetween and, as stated, I .may make the contact sur- -ffaces tand tot any suitable conformation in order to insure this result. Intermediate of the shoulder d and the disk c* I provide a r than this part of the stem c, said tiange being -inelined, tapered, curved, or otherwise formed upon its upper surface as shown at di and, as shown at @75, I recess the lower end oi the removabletop b of a size and shape corresponding to the surface Min order to prevent leakage therebetween when the surfaces d4 and Z5 are in close contact and, in practice., I make the distance between the surfaces d' and di of the stem thesaine as that between the surfaces d2 and Z5 of the removable top b in order that the contact of the corresponding surfaces will occur simultaneously and thus double the etiiciency ofmy device, and, if desired, I may provide y .iis-nge d3 of considerablygreater diameteruppermost position,fleaving the valve fully open, andstill prevent iiuid'froni escaping through the"-` passage provided for the said Istein, thus permitting the removal ofthe cap for the removal and substitution of the packing b4, thisk not being possible with valves of this type as at present constructed, and in the use'of which it is necessary to shut od the fluid from an entire ,system or from that portion in which re-packing is to be done;
As hereinbefore stated, I do not limitniyseltto any speci-fic type of v alve whereinmy improvement might be employed, neither to the particular fluid passing therethrough, nor to\the exact configuration of the contacting' surfaces, my invention being in the provision ci' non-leaking means'between a valve-stem and casing with the valve in full l openposition and during the substitution of the usual packing. y Having lly described my invention,
what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszp l; A; valve casing having a valve therein and provided with an interior screw thread,
inwardlyv` inclined at one endend outwardly flared at the otherend, and a stemv'connected with, said valve and provided with-2a screw thread engaged by s -aid first named thread, said valve stern being inwardly inclined at adapte to' be seated in the inclined -an flared y portions respectively of said Valve casing, simultaneously.
2. Ina valve casing7 a valve, and a stein f yconnected to the valve, said stem being provided with a screw thread for a ortlonfof its length and beinginwardly inclined at the outer end ofsaid' thread and being provided with an outwardly iared flange at the inner 1: end of said thread, said valve casing having coperating seats forthe inclined and ilared lportions of said stern.
In testimony that I claim the lbregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres- 20 ence'oi'l the'subscribing Witnesses this 18th day of May 1910. WILLIAM H. CURTIN. Witnesses: f"
