Abstract
1404924 Making seals for Wankel engines AUDI NSU AUTO UNION AG and WANKEL GmbH 15 Jan 1974 [17 Jan 1973] 1802/74 Heading B3A [Also in Division F1] In a method of making a scraper ring for a rotary piston a cast-iron blank 1 is heated within an annular zone 3, or 12, by, e.g. a gasprotected electric arc, an electron beam or a laser beam until molten, the zone is chilled rapidly to form a leduburitic structure and the blank is machined to reduce the cross-section as indicated by broken lines 6, 7; 9, 7; or 13, to produce a scraping edge 8, or 14. Alternatively, the ring is formed by centrifugal casting and chilled while in the mould to create the leduburitic structure. A martensitic structure is obtained in the region adjoining the said zone. A grey cast-iron with a low phosphorus and sulphur content is preferred.
