Abstract

1404575 Mixing KODAK LTD 10 Oct 1972 [27 July 1971] 35195/71 Heading B1C [Also in Division G2] A method of making an optically transparent dispersion of a pigment having an average particle size less than 0.25 micron in a liquid resin comprises subjecting the pigment and the resin to ultrasonic vibrations until the pigment is dispersed therein. The pigment may be in the form of a paste with an involatile organic liquid and the resin may be an unpolymerised liquid thermosetting resin, a thermoplastic resin which is kept molten during the dispersion process, or a liquid precursor of the resin i.e. an unpolymerised or partly polymerised monomer or monomer mixture. A polymerisation catalyst may be included with the liquid resin. The dispersion may 'be cast between optically flat glass plates and then heated to polymerise the resin to provide e.g. an optical filter; other optical elements may be formed by machining and polishing or by casting in an appropriate mould. Reference is made to camera filters and lenses for goggles. In an example diethylene glycol bis allyl carbonate is used as a suitable thermosetting resin, together with di-isopropyl peroxy dicarbonate as catalyst and a dispersed carbon paste; ultrasonic vibration was applied for several minutes to obtain a dispersion which was filtered and then cast and heated to obtain a filter of optical density 1.6.
