Abstract

1404342 Spraying of weeds CHIPMAN CHEMICAL CO Ltd 3 April 1973 [25 April 1972] 19086/72 Heading AID A spraying apparatus is mounted in a standard-size freight container for mounting on a railway wagon, liquid herbicide being drawn from storage tanks 9 and 10 by variable metering pumps 13 and 12 at a rate proportional to the speed of the wagon and introduced into mixing chambers 15 and 14 fed with water by a pump 16, the diluted herbicide passing along conduits 21 to spray nozzles 22 and 24. The exterior fittings are demountable for storage within the container. The metering pumps may be driven by a wagon axle, or by a ground or rail-engaging wheel on the container, via a hydraulic, electrical or mechanical (belt or cable) transmission; alternatively the metering pumps may be driven electrically from a diesel generator at a speed controlled by an electric sensor at a wagon axle or rail-engaging wheel, the pump output being adjustable by a thyristor control. Water is supplied from the train to the conduit 6 and liquid herbicide to the conduits 7 and 8. Insoluble herbicide may be placed in tank 3 and mechanically agitated in water to form a suspension. Pump 5 passes liquid from conduits 6, 7, 8 or tank 3 to the storage tanks 9 and 10 which hold different herbicides.
