Abstract

1403750 Ammonium nitrate AMERICAN HYDROCARBON CO 21 July 1972 [23 July 1971] 34281/72 Heading C1A Ammonium nitrate is prepared by reacting in the gaseous phase ammonia with excess molecular oxygen to produce a mixture of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide and reacting this mixture with at least a stoichiometric amount based on the nitrogen oxides, of ammonia gas at 60‹ to 425‹ F. Preferably the wt. ratio of molecular oxygen to ammonia in the first step is at least 3À6 : 1 and the reaction is effected in the presence of a platinium/rhodium wire gauze catalyst. Depending on the temperature in the second step the ammonium nitrate may be formed in the solid state, molten state or in aqueous solution.
