Claims (12)
1. A process for the preparation of ammonium nitrate which comprises reacting ammonia in the gas phase with an excess of an oxidizing agent providing molecular oxygen under the reaction conditions at a temperature sufficient to cause the formation of nitrogen oxide reaction products, and reacting said reaction products with about a stoichiometric amount of ammonia gas at a temperature in the range of from about 60°F. to about 425 °F. to form ammonium nitrate.
2. The process in claim 1 in which the oxidizing agent is molecular oxygen.
3. The process of claim 2 wherein the molecular oxygen is present in an amount of at least about 3. 6 parts, by weight, per part ammonia.
4. The process of claim 2 wherein the molecular oxygen is present in an amount of at least about 5. 0 parts, by weight, per part ammonia.
5. The process of claim 1 wherein the reaction of ammonia and the oxidizing agent is carried out in the presence of a catalyst.
6. The process of claim 5 wherein the reaction of ammonia and the oxidizing agent is carried out by passing through a platinum wire gauze catalyst.
7. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature of the reaction between said reaction product gas and the ammonia is maintained in the range from about 90°F. to about 200eF.
8. • " 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature in the reaction of ammonia and said reaction product gas is maintained at a level such that the ammonium nitrate formed is in the solid state.
9. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature in the reaction of ammonia and said reaction product gas is maintained at a level such that the ammonium nitrate formed is in the molten state.
10. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature in the reaction of ammonia and said reaction product gas is maintained at a level such that the ammonium nitrate formed is in an aqueous solution.
11. A process for the preparation of ammonium nitrate, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings and to the Examples.
