Abstract

1403491 Fuel elements SIEMENS AG 26 Jan 1973 [29 Jan 1972] 4223/73 Heading G6C A reactor fuel element comprises a plurality of fuel assemblies each consisting of an array of fuel rods with means for maintaining the fuel rods in predetermined relative positions, the fuel assemblies being mounted end-to-end on a common support structure and the element including means attached to at least one of the fuel assemblies for damping transverse oscillation of the fuel assemblies when they are mounted on the support structure in a reactor cooling duct. As shown, the fuel assemblies comprise fuel rods 9 held between upper and lower rod-retaining plates 4a, 4b, with intermediate spacer grids (not shown) being used where necessitated by the length of the fuel rods. Resilient sliding shoes 11 attached to the plates 4b facilitate introduction of the fuel assemblies into cooling ducts and damp their transverse oscillation. The shoes 11 bear against the walls of a cooling duct (not shown). A support tube 1, to the lower end of which is secured a support plate (not shown), extends through central bores 8 formed in the plates 4a, 4b. As an alternative to the shoes 11, the individual fuel assemblies may be resiliently displaced relative to each other in the cooling duct, thereby causing them to abut the cooling duct as by providing each upper plate 4a with a pin 5 which engages in a corresponding bore 6 formed in the lower plate 4b of the adjacent fuel assembly, a spring 7 pressing the pin 5 to one side. Instead of bearing on each other under their own full weight, the fuel assemblies may be individually suspended from the support tube 1. As shown in Fig. 3, the tube 1 is provided with lateral projections 1a, 1b and the plates 4a, 4b are formed with corresponding recesses in their bores 8. The fuel assemblies can thus be pushed on to the tube 1 and rotated through 90 degrees shortly before reaching the location of these projections, whereupon they are suspended from the projections. The pins 5 engage once more into the bores 6 and so prevent relative rotation of the fuel assemblies. In this case, it is also necessary for the support plate at the lower end of the support rod to be fitted with a pin 5 in order that the lowermost fuel assembly, and consequently also the other fuel assemblies, are not able to rotate relative to the projections 1a, 1b. The support tube 1 is provided at its upper end with coupling elements adapted to cooperate with a gripper device of a reactor charging machine.
