1403399 Tying hose coils DART INDUSTRIES Inc 21 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 59000/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division D1] A packaging machine comprises a plurality of mandrels 16 mounted on a rotatable turret, a motor 64 at one working station about the turret to rotate each mandrel in turn to wind a length of hose or rope thereon, and at least one tying device positioned at another working station to place a tie around the coiled hose. Each mandrel comprises a bottom adjustable flange 70, a top movable flange 46 mounted on a U-shaped frame 42 slidable along a pair of shafts 38, 40, and a centre core composed of segments 74 pivoted to a base support 80. The tops of the segments are held radially extended by a conical plug which rises to permit the segment to pivot inwardly when the top flange is lifted for removal of a coil. Card veeding device 336.-At a first station disposed about the turret a card is fed by vacuum cups from the bottom of a stack to grippers on a slide. As the slide retreats a cam groove 374 causes the grippers to pivot and place the card on top of the mandrel core. The top flange 46 is then lowered to grip the card. Hose feeding and winding.-The hose is fed by a continuous feed from an extruder via a dancer roll assembly to an intermittent feeding and cutting assembly 184. The assembly includes a pair of feed rolls which initially fed the hose to a clamp on the bottom flange of a mandrel, then separate to permit the mandrel to pull the hose, and, after a set length has been cut, move together to grip the hose. At the winding station the motor 64 is connected to coupling 65 to drive the core and bottom flange of the mandrel and via shaft 38 the top flange. The hose is guided on to the core by a channel which is reciprocated stepwise along the core and is swung outwardly as the coil increases. Tying and inserting tie through washer.-As the mandrel is moved to the next two stations it is indexed by a planet wheel 54 on the shaft 38 engaging a stationary sun gear 24. There are respectively one and two devices 196 at the two stations. Each device comprises a pair of tie guides 208, 210 which close around the coil. A length of tie is fed into the guides by two roller pairs 226, 236 driven by a reversible motor. During the reverse driving of the motor the front rollers 226 idle while for a time the back rollers are separated by a cam controlled by the motor and for the rest engage to tension the tie around the coil. After the tie has been severed the two ends are twisted together by a rotatable tube 292. The typing device 196 as a whole and the twist tube separately are movable towards the mandrel. One of the devices 196 inserts a tie through a hole in the card and through a washer fed from a magazine. Unloading.-The frame 42 carries portions 390 which when the frame is raised by a piston cylinder arrangement 44 lifts the coil off the mandrel and a rake 394 pushes the coil on to a conveyer 392. Alternatively a gripper unit may lift the coil on to the conveyer.
