Abstract

1403305 Sheathing cables PHILLIPS CABLES Ltd 2 July 1973 [6 July 1972] 31497/73 Headings B3A and B3E A method of sheathing a cable core 11 comprises advancing longitudinally a cable core and a strip of sheathing material, crimping the strip, stretching the crimped strip longitudinally so that longitudinal edges of the strip are of substantially equal length, and longitudinally skelping the strip about the core so that the longitudinal edges of the strip overlap. Aluminium strip 1 is fed from a roll 2, through corrugating rolls 3 driven by a variable speed motor 4, and then over guide roll 5, a smooth dancer roll 6 and a smooth guide roll 7. A suspended weight 9 connected to a movable arm 8 controls the tension in strip 1. The strip passes through a sheath former 12 which wraps the strip above the core 11 for subsequent treatment in a heated steel tube 14 where a seal is formed in the overlapping edges of the strip. A jacket of protective material, e.g. polyethylene, is extruded around the sheathed core 13 in an extrusion head 15 of an extrusion apparatus 16. The amount of crimping in the strip 1 is of the order of 1 to 10% reduction of the original strip length. The depth and number of corrugations per inch may be varied. The strip may be rendered extensible by using rolls each having a surface embossed with small indentations and projections.
