Abstract
1403265 Detecting ionizing radiation G D WHITLOCK 6 Oct 1972 46250/72 Heading G 1 A In a device for detecting ionizing radiation from an article (not shown) having a ring form surface surrounding it, a hermetic seal between the device and the ring form surface is formed by positioning an opaque resilient sealing ring 5 on the ring form surface and depressing an upper part 9 of a telescopic housing included in the device thereby forcing air out of a non return valve 44 so that when the part 6 returns to its original position, under the action of a spring 10, a partial vacuum is formed inside in spaces 12 and 6. Spaces 12 and 6 communicate with one another by means of passages 11 and 21b. A scintillator 13 and a photo-multiplier 17 are in a sealed casing 19 in communication with the atmosphere via a duct 8b so that when the partial vacuum is created the atmospheric pressure causes the casing 19 to move against the action of a spring 14 towards the sealing ring area, that is, after a shutter 21b has been moved out of its path by a solenoid (not shown) activated by a pressure sensitive switch 30.
