Abstract

1403252 Acid and alkali resistant coatings; electrodes RHEINISCH-WESTFALISCHES ELEKTRIZITATSWERK AG 28 July 1972 [7 Aug 1971 (2) 10 May 1972] 35294/72 Headings C7B and C7U The surfaces of metals of Groups IV to VIII, e.g. Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and particularly Ti, are converted by contact with gaseous chloramine, NH 2 Cl, free from water vapour or oxygen. Instead of NH 2 Cl, gases which react to form NH 2 Cl may be used, e.g. NH 3 with CCl 4 , HCCl 3 or SOCl 2 or N2 with NH 4 Cl. In addition, metal particles may be converted by the NH 2 Cl and be deposited on a heated surface to give a protective layer. The converted layer comprises the substrate metal, nitrogen and chlorine. In an example, Ni powder is reacted with NH 2 Cl resulting in a crystalline sublimate comprising Ni, N and Cl which can be formed into electrodes for electro-chemical processes, or protective layers for such electrodes. Ti parts may also be used for electrodes after being treated with NH 2 Cl.
