Abstract
1402542 Compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorus ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 28 July 1972 [27 May 1971] 17505/71 Headings C1A and C1B Compounds containing both N and P and having an N : P ratio of greater than 2À4 : 1, e.g. 2À46 : 1 to 2À69 : 1 are prepared by forming a dispersion of P 2 O 5 in excess liquid NH 3 with agitation under conditions such that local temperatures do not exceed 100‹ C. and then maintaining the reaction mixture containing liquid ammonia at a temperature in the range 30‹ to 100‹ C. for sufficient time to produce compounds having an N : P ratio of greater than 2À4 : 1. Preferably the liquid NH 3 used in the first stage has a bulk temperature of less than 0‹ C., the most preferred temperature being - 33‹ C. The second stage is preferably carried out above 50‹ C., most preferably at 70-80‹ C. The weight ratio of ammonia to P 2 O 5 may be 3 : 1, preferably 5 : 1 and the reaction may take place in the presence of up to 30% H 2 O. Condensed materials useful as flame retardants may be prepared by heating the products to at least 100‹ C. The products may be used as animal feed additives, in plant growth promoter compositions and as fertilizers.
