Abstract
1402529 Discharging elongate ferromagnetic articles from belt conveyers BRITISH STEEL CORP 8 Dec 1972 [10 Dec 1971] 57502/71 Heading B8A [Also in Division H1] Magnetic device for handling ferromagnetic materials of, e.g. elongate form comprises a groove 21 carrying an electromagnetic core 22 in end bearings 23; the core having eight polepieces 24 with serrated polygonal edge profiling (Fig. 2; Figs. 3, 4, not shown) and being energized by coils 26 surrounding the core between the polepieces energized over sliprings 27. A disc brake and calipers 28 operating on the core are fixed to the frame by block 29 also carrying the slipring contacts. The polepieces have a serrated edge profile giving six equiangularly spaced carrying positions for longitudinal members, e.g. channel, angle, bulb or flat sections, which may be loaded from endless belt 36 passing over offset pulley 37 and retained by the serrations. The electromagnet and the retained section rotate gravitationally to position 39, are arrested by braking, and de-energized to release. The rotation may be motor driven and the device may be end loaded. Plural such devices may be applied to a long section with assisting magnetic fields. Loading may alternatively be by pusher arms.
