Abstract

1,269,174. Facsimile apparatus. ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS Inc. 6 Oct., 1970 [29 Oct., 1969], No. 47446/70. Heading H4F. A drum 10 for carrying a sheet of paper 14 to be optically scanned for facsimile transmission comprises an aluminium cylinder with metal end pieces 12, 17 mounted on a shaft 11. Magnetic strips are embedded in the cylindrical surface of the drum and a clamping bar 13 is rotatably mounted between the end faces so as to clamp the leading edge of a sheet of paper 14 between the bar 13 and drum by the attraction of one of the magnetic strips. A sliding bar 15 slides in annular grooves in the end pieces 12, 17 and clamps the other end of the sheet of paper, the bar 15 being held in position by the attraction of another of the magnetic strips. The clamping bar 13 and sliding bar 15 may be of a paramagnetic material, e.g. steel or nickel, and the magnetic strips may be formed axially of the drum or helically around it, and may be either permanent magnets or electromagnets.
