Abstract

1402516 Paper-making BIRD MACHINE CO lNC 29 Jan 1974 [7 March 1973] 04164/74 Heading D2A A process for producing a kraft paper laminate of top and base stock layers from kraft fibre slurry which has been digested to a yield of at least 54%, comprises the steps of subjecting the digested slurry to screening between a screen and a member imparting high frequency and instense mechanical pulsation to the slurry to separate it into a first fraction passing through the screen and a second fraction not passing through the screen while preventing the screen from blending, the first fraction having between 10% and 30%, preferably 20%, of the total fibre content of the unscreened slurry and consisting almost entirely of short fibres, and the second fraction containing the remaining, mainly long fibres of the slurry, and utilising the first and second fractions as the top and base stock layers of the laminate. As shown, fibre from a digester 10 is diluted in a blow tank 12, prerefined at 14 and pumped to a fine screening machine 18. The machine 18 preferably comprises a coaxial screen and rotor, bumps on the rotor surface imparting high frequency and intense pulses to the slurry to prevent the screen blinding. The first fraction is fed via a washer 20 to be utilised as the top stock layer. The second fraction is fed to a refiner 22 and a coarse screen 24. Rejects from screen 24 are fed back to the refiner 22 while the accepted portion of the second fraction is fed via washer 26 to be utilised as the base stock layer. In an alternatinve embodiment (Fig 3, not shown) all the fibres of the digested slurry are washed and refined prior to fine screening.
