Abstract

1401966 Sensing webs MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 13 July 1972 [17 July 1971] 33664/71 Heading B8R [Also in Division F2] A web inspection device has detection means spanning or arrayed across a web feed path defined by a cylindrical guide roll 1 in close parallel proximity to the detection means, the roll being supported or located, at least at each end, by air bearings acting on a cylindrical surface of the roll. The detection means may be a wire 8, a laser beam or an array of sensing fingers. The roll, which may be tubular, is supported by exterior air bearings 2 or interior air bearings, or both. The ends of the roll are held between ball thrust bearings (5), (6), Fig. 1 (not shown), or air thrust bearings, Fig. 3 (not shown). The air bearings may be overhead, Fig. 4 (not shown), in which ease the roll is supported by the web (17) and retained, in the absence of a web, by a wire (18).
