Abstract

1401386 Vibratory finishing SHIKISHIMA TIPTON MFG CO Ltd 12 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 17641/73 Heading B3D [Also in Division B2] A method of finishing workpieces under compressed conditions by vibration comprises causing a mass including workpieces and abrasive medium to circulate by vibration inside a circular annular vibratory finishing tub having a radial cross-sectional area at a centre portion E greater than that at end portions F, G. The tub may be substantially horizontal (Fig. 4, not shown) or inclined and have an upper part 1, descending part 1a, ascending part 1b, and a separating part 1c. The top of the tub is closed except for a charging port which is closed during operation by a cover 16a. The tub is supported by springs 5 on a pedestal 4 and has a cylindrical housing 7 provided with a flange 7 on which is mounted an electric motor 9 having weights 10. A dam 12 is secured to a superposed portion 11 of the tub and has an ascending part and a descending part 12a. A flap 13 is movable about a pivot 14 between a position shown in which the mass after passing over the dam continues around the tub, and a position 13a in which the mass passes on to a screen 15, the abrasive medium falling through the screen into the tub and the workpieces being automatically ejected along a path 20. During treatment, the mass moves in the direction 17b along a path 17c from the portion F having a medium cross-section to the portion E having the largest cross-section. From the portion E the mass moves up the dam 12 to a portion G having the smallest cross-section so that the mass is compressed as it passes over the dam and, when the flap is in its upper position, into the portion F. A plate 11 adjacent the portion E prevents back flow of the mass during the separating operation. The apparatus may be used as a grinding mill for milling of bauxite ores using aluminium ball. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 905,281.
