Abstract
1401004 Disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 10 July 1972 [20 July 1971] 33972/72 Heading F2E In an hydraulically operated spot type disc brake a caliper 12 is mounted for sliding movement in a stationary drag-taking member 1 this sliding movement being effected between complementary pairs of bearing surfaces on opposite sides of the disc and the axes A, B, of the bearing surfaces being offset from each other in order to resist movement of the caliper 12 with respect to the stationary member 1 in a circumferential and/or radial direction. As shown, the axes A, B are offset radially but they may be offset circumferentially or both radially and circumferentially. The bearing surfaces are formed by bearing boxes; each bearing box comprises a respective semi-cylindrical portion 7 or 8 provided on ribs 5, 6 of the member 1, and a respective semi-cylindrical shell 9 or 10 connected respectively to ribs 5, 6 by screw 11. The bearing box 7, 9 slidably receives an extension 16 of caliper 12 which extension 16 provides a cylinder bore 17 housing a piston 25 for direct actuation of a pad assembly 24 the backing plate of assembly 24 having an extension 27 received within piston 25. The bearing box 8, 10 on the other side of the disc may also receive a caliper extension, but as shown it receives a fitting 21 press fitted into a through bore 20 of limb 15 of caliper 12, and the backing plate of an indirectly actuated pad assembly 23 is provided with an axial extension 27 which is closely received within the fitting 21. In another construction a sliding connection is provided between the indirectly actuated pad assembly 23 and the fitting 21, and between the directly actuated pad assembly 24 and the piston 25. In a further construction the drag-taking member 1 is provided on opposite sides of the disc with opposed axially spaced inwardly directed integral or other axial extensions of circular outline. Each extension is received in a complementary journal defined by inner cylindrical surfaces of a pair of shells which are detachably clamped together, one shell of each pair comprising a part of a limb of the caliper on that side of the disc.
